GSS Character Counts Traits for the 2014/2015 School Year Annual Theme: Make yourself proud: Be the best person that you can be.

Author admin Posted Date 9/17/2014 10:25 PM

September- SETTING GOALS. The 3 P’s of a Successful School Year- PLANNING, PREPARATION, AND PRACTICE- This means getting ready. Organizing ourselves to achieve them. This means planning and preparing to make the changes necessary to improve ourselves for top achievement. Finally, putting out plans and preparations into practice in our day to day activities.

October- HARD WORK- This is doing what it takes to get the work done. This is working until the work is done. This is not watching the clock. This is putting our vision to work to get success. VISION+ HARDWORK=SUCCESS. Nothing is possible on this Earth without strong effort. We have to set our goals and work hard to reach them. Success will not simply come to those who wait. We cannot wait for it, we have to work for it.

November- FITNESS, HEALTH and SAFETY-  Physical and mental health through making good choices for daily exercise and nutrition. Fitness is the ability to avoid stress by being in the best shape and condition.

December- Making Right Choices- This is not falling victim to peer pressure or advertising. This is using values, morals, and principles to make our big and small choices. This is consulting out trusted family members and respected adults for advice. This is reading and investigating before making decisions. This is staying away from things that might stop our progress like drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, the wrong types of friends, and other negative influences.  THINK TWICE- CHOOSE ONCE .

January- LITERACY and LEARNING- Enthusiasm for reading, writing and education. Understanding that knowledge increases when we are more literate and the more we make education a priority. This includes the act of being readers and literate people and promoting reading and literacy for others.  READERS ARE LEADERS.

February- BELIEF IN YOURSELF- (Black History Month) This is setting goals, working toward them, and living your dreams.  It is believing that if you put your energy into something, you can achieve it. It is knowing your talents and developing them.  If you dream it, you can achieve it.

March- The 5 Kinds of RESPECT- Self Respect, Respect for Elders and Family (including teachers and those who guide us). Respect for our country and our heritage. Respect for the beliefs and diversity of others. Respect for the law.   GIVE RESPECT TO RECEIVE RESPECT.

April- AWARENESS- (The Global Month of Service) This is doing your part and making a difference. It is seeing the world around you with open eyes and recognizing how you can help to relieve the difficulties of others. It is using peaceful means to show others about the problems people face when they are of lower incomes, lack access to healthcare or clean water or other issues. It is giving your time and energy to help others and lift of the lives of other people. It is making the world cleaner and better. It is thinking about others more than you think about yourself.  OPEN MINDS> OPEN HEARTS.

May- PEACE- (International Poetry Month)- This is the act of being peaceful and promoting peace. It includes toleration, compromise, acceptance, unity, and appreciation of others.

June- PROBLEM SOLVING- 1) Identify the problem. 2) List out possible solutions.  3) Evaluate the solutions. 4) Apply the best one of the solutions.  5) Evaluate how well the solution is working.   IF THE SOLUTION YOU CHOSE IS NOT WORKING, go back to step 4.   Every problem has a solution.

July/August- DETERMINATION- This is using our time wisely and looking toward the future while using the Vacation Enrichment Program to set goals for the next school year- national examinations and improving our reading, academics, handwriting, mathematics skills, conduct, and organizational skills.
